Jin Xing

Jin Xing is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning dancer. She was born in 1967 in China to Korean parents and assigned male at birth. She has always been passionate about dancing and began formal training at age 9 when she joined the People's Liberation Army to receive military and dance training. Around age 18, she won her first national dance championship and was crowned the number one male dancer in the country. After touring, she returned home in 1995 and became the first and still only public figure to undergo gender affirmation surgery (aka sex reassignment surgery (SRS)) in China. She returned to the stage a year later to dance as a woman for the first time. She later founded and became the director of the Shanghai Jin Xing Dance Theatre, China’s first independent dance company. She was a judge on China’s version of "So You Think You Can Dance" and hosted other television shows as well. In 2000, she became a mom, adopting three children, and married her husband in 2005. #LGBTQHistory #QTPOCHistory #JinXing #Intersectionality
