Dr. Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa was a queer, Mexican-American writer, and scholar. Her writings focused on the treatments of women in Chicano culture, queer people in the straight community- particularly communities of color, and Chicanx/Latinx identities in white American society. Her writings reflected her life growing up on the Mexico–Texas border and highlighted social and cultural marginalization she experienced as a Chicana, as a woman, and as a lesbian. She developed theories developed theories about the marginal, in-between, and mixed cultures that develop along borders, and made major contributions to feminist, queer, and Chicana cultural theories such that her essays are considered foundational texts in the field of Latinx philosophy At the time of her death in 2004, she was completing her dissertation to earn her doctorate in Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
