Frida Kahlo was a bisexual, disabled, Mexican painter and activist committed to Mexican culture, socialism, and issues of social justice in Mexica and the USA. She was born in 1907 in Mexico City and is of German, Amerindian, and Spanish descent. She contracted polio at six years old which left her with a limp, and would later be severely injured in a bus accident that fractured her hip and spine. It was during her long, slow, bed-ridden recovery that she began her famed painting career which included Two Nudes in a Forest, The Two Fridas, and The Broken Column. She married the famous Mexican painter and activist Diego Rivera. Diego was known to have many affairs, as did Frida, who bedded a bevy of men and women including Josephine Baker, and some of her husband’s mistresses. Frida would sometimes dress in male attire as a means to express her power and independence. She remained politically active fighting against capitalism, imperialism, and colonialism until her death in 1954.
